Is your child constantly online?  What is internet addiction and might your child have it?

Addiction has a few definitions.  Here is one:

Addiction is a condition in which a person engages in use of a substance or in a behavior for which the rewarding effects provide a compelling incentive to repeatedly pursue the behavior despite detrimental consequences.

In other words, addiction happens when you keep using a substance or doing a behavior even when it’s harmful to you.

Internet addiction is “characterized by excessive or poorly controlled preoccupations, urges, or behaviors regarding computer use, and internet access that leads to impairment or distress.”

In this week’s FB Live chat, I give you some questions to consider to assess how addicted your child is (or is not).  You can also google “internet addiction test” and find helpful questionnaires online.  I reference Dr. Andrew Doan’s book “Hooked on Games: The Lure and Cost of Video Game and Internet Addiction.”  It is an eye opener and excellent.
